What should I know before I rely on Naver Map?
Facts checked October 29, 2026
Install and set up Naver Map on home Wi-Fi before you fly, because search and routing are easier to learn without a time limit. According to an official survey reported by Korea.net, 56.2% of foreign visitors used Naver Map, the most used Korean app among them.
- Worth knowing: The app is published by NAVER Corp. and is available from the App Store and Google Play. Check the publisher name before installing.
- A common mistake: Typing only an English spelling. Small shops and restaurants are often listed under their Korean names, so screenshot the Korean name from a booking or website.
- Local tip: Menu labels can change between app updates. If a setting is not where this guide says, look for the same word (Settings, Language, Directions) elsewhere in the menu.
This guide could not verify from an official source whether maps can be downloaded for offline use, so plan on having mobile data, an eSIM or Wi-Fi when you need a route. Our essential apps guide covers the other apps worth installing.
How do I switch Naver Map to English?
Open the app's settings, choose Language and select English; this works on both Android and iPhone. Wise's guide describes the path as the MY tab, then Settings, then Language, and notes that iPhone users can also set a preferred language for the app in the phone's own Settings. Naver itself says Naver Map has been offered in English, Chinese and Japanese since 2018, according to its December 30, 2024 press release.
- Install. Download NAVER Map from your app store and allow location access when asked.
- Open settings. Tap the MY tab, then Settings.
- Pick the language. Choose Language, then English.
- Restart the app. Reopen it so place pages and transit details show in English.
The same press release says Naver added multilingual visitor reviews and place filters in 2024 and improved translations for place pages and transit details. Translation is not complete everywhere, so expect some Korean labels to remain.
How do I find a place when the English name fails?
Search the Korean name or address, shorten the name to its main part, and confirm the pin is in the right neighborhood. Wise recommends the Korean name for smaller businesses and warns about chains with many branches; SeoulStart suggests trying the romanized name first and falling back to Korean.
- Copy the Korean name from the venue's website, a booking confirmation or a Papago translation.
- Use the address if the name returns the wrong branch.
- Save the listing after you find it. Saving favorites requires a Naver account, so sign in once if you want a saved list.
- Share places by tapping the share icon and sending the link by KakaoTalk or SMS.
Practical example: you book a small cafe in Seongsu and the confirmation shows a Korean name. Paste that name into the search bar, check that the pin is near the right station, save it, and send the link to a travel partner.
How do I read bus and subway routes?
Tap Directions, enter your start and destination, choose the transit tab and compare transfers and walking distance, not only total time. Naver says the app shows real-time arrivals, subway maps, boarding and alighting guidance and alternative transport options.
| Detail | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Number of transfers | Fewer changes mean less walking in big stations | Prefer one transfer over two to save a few minutes |
| Walking distance | Long walks add up in heat, rain or cold | Compare the walking figure before choosing |
| Exit number | Large stations have many exits | Match the exit in the last step to the numbered signs |
| Real-time arrival | Buses can be late or skip stops | Search a bus by route or stop number |
| Boarding alert | Warns you before your stop | On iPhone, select your train for the alert to work |

Naver Map or Google Maps: which should I use?
Use Naver Map for walking and transit in Korea, and keep Google Maps as a backup for comparison. SeoulStart reports that Korean law restricts exporting precision map data overseas, and that a review committee conditionally approved Google's request for map data on February 27, 2026, but it found no primary source confirming improved Korean routing since. Wise advises comparing against Naver Map or Kakao Map if a Google Maps route looks wrong.
Kakao Map also offers walking and transit directions with English, and links to Kakao T. If you are still setting up phones, see our guide on getting a Korean phone number.
FAQ
Is Naver Map available in English?
Yes. Naver says Naver Map is offered in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese. Choose English in the app's language setting.
Why use Naver Map instead of Google Maps in Korea?
Naver Map is built around Korean addresses, places, buses and subways, with real-time transit arrivals. Google Maps has long been limited for walking and transit routes in Korea, so compare the two if a route looks wrong.
What should I do if Naver Map cannot find a place?
Search the Korean name or Korean address instead of the English spelling, shorten the name to its main part, and check that the pin sits in the expected area.
Do I need a Naver account?
Searching and routes work without one, but saving places to favorites requires signing in with a Naver account.
