Three days is enough for Seoul's core if you group stops by area. Spend day one on Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insa-dong and Gwangjang Market, day two on Changdeokgung, DDP and Namsan, and day three on Gangnam and Hongdae. Palaces close on different weekdays, so check first.

What should I know before I arrive?
Details checked October 2, 2026
Plan around closing days and subway stations, not around a fixed order of sights. Seoul's highlights are spread across several districts, and the two big palaces close on different days.
- Closing days: Visit Seoul: Gyeongbokgung lists the palace as closed on Tuesdays, while Visit Seoul: Changdeokgung lists it as closed on Mondays. Put the right palace on the right day.
- Palace hours: For September and October, Gyeongbokgung is listed 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry an hour before closing. Changdeokgung is listed 09:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:00 for February to May and September to October.
- Tickets: Both palaces list adult entry at 3,000 won for foreigners aged 19 to 64. Gyeongbokgung is free if you wear a complete hanbok, per the same page.
- Getting there: Arrive by train or bus using our airport transfer guide, and set up maps and transit apps with the essential apps guide.
What should I do on day 1?
Spend day one on Seoul's historic core: Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insa-dong, then dinner at Gwangjang Market. These stops are close together, so you can walk between most of them. Visit Seoul's beginner course puts Gwanghwamun Square, Gyeongbokgung, Insa-dong, Samcheong-dong and Gwangjang Market on the same day (Visit Seoul: 2 nights 3 days course).
- Morning: Gyeongbokgung. Reach it from Gwanghwamun Station (Line 5, Exit 2, about 471 metres) or Gyeongbokgung Station (Line 3, Exit 5, about 492 metres), per Visit Seoul. Remember it is closed Tuesdays; if day one is a Tuesday, swap to day two's Changdeokgung plan.
- Midday: Bukchon Hanok Village. Visit within the listed 10:00 to 17:00 window and keep noise down, because people live there (Visit Seoul: Bukchon).
- Afternoon: Insa-dong. Tea houses, galleries and craft shops; Visit Seoul says the street is traffic-free on Sundays (Visit Seoul: Insa-dong).
- Evening: Gwangjang Market. The Food Alley is listed 09:00 to 23:00 daily, and the nearest station is Jongno 5-ga (Line 1, Exit 8), about 62 metres away (Visit Seoul: Gwangjang Market). The main market is listed closed on Sundays, though the Food Alley is listed daily.
Practical example: a visitor landing in the morning can drop bags at a hotel, start at Gyeongbokgung after lunch, and still reach Gwangjang Market for dinner without taking more than one subway ride.
What should I do on day 2?
Day two mixes a second palace, Seoul's design landmark and the city view from Namsan. Use Changdeokgung in the morning, DDP in the afternoon and Namsan for sunset and night views.
- Morning: Changdeokgung. It is listed closed on Mondays, with Anguk Station (Line 3, Exit 3) about 389 metres away. Visit Seoul describes a general tour and a separate Secret Garden (Huwon) tour; reservations are made through the palace's official reservation service, so book ahead.
- Afternoon: Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Designed by Zaha Hadid and opened March 21, 2014, DDP is listed open 10:00 to 20:00, with hours varying by space. It is 37 metres from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (Lines 2, 4 and 5), Exit 1 (Visit Seoul: DDP).
- Evening: Namsan and N Seoul Tower. Visit Seoul's 5-day plan lists the cable car at 15,000 won round trip and the observatory at 21,000 won for adults (Visit Seoul: first-time visitor guide). A separate Visit Seoul walking-tour page lists tower hours of 10:00 to 23:00 daily (Visit Seoul: Namsan). Prices and hours can change, so confirm on the tower's official site before you go.
What should I do on day 3?
Use day three for modern Seoul: Gangnam by day, then Hongdae in the evening. Visit Seoul's beginner course ends with Gangnam Station, COEX Mall and Hongik University Station on the AREX line, which also helps if you fly out from Incheon.
- Morning: Garosu-gil. Tree-lined boutique street reached from Sinsa Station Exit 8 or Apgujeong Station Exit 4 on Line 3 (Visit Seoul: Garosu-gil).
- Midday: COEX and Bongeunsa. The Visit Seoul: Gangnam City Tour route lists Gangnam Station, COEX, Bongeunsa Temple and K-Star Road.
- Early evening: Banpo Rainbow Fountain (seasonal). Visit Seoul lists it as operating April to October, with shows at 12:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30 and 21:00 in the April to June and September to October season, each about 20 minutes (Visit Seoul: Banpo fountain). The nearest subway listed is Express Bus Terminal Station Exit 8-1, about 1.1 km away.
- Night: Hongdae. Known for young artists, busking and clubs. A Saturday Free Market is listed for March to November, 13:00 to 18:00 (Visit Seoul: Hongdae Free Market).
How do the three days compare?
Day one is the most walkable, day two has the most scheduling constraints, and day three covers the most distance. Use the table to decide where to cut.
| Day | Main stops | Key timing rule | Nearest station (per Visit Seoul) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon, Insa-dong, Gwangjang | Palace closed Tuesdays; Bukchon 10:00-17:00 | Gwanghwamun (Line 5) / Jongno 5-ga (Line 1) |
| 2 | Changdeokgung, DDP, N Seoul Tower | Palace closed Mondays; Secret Garden by reservation | Anguk (Line 3) / Dongdaemun History & Culture Park |
| 3 | Garosu-gil, COEX, Banpo fountain, Hongdae | Fountain April to October only | Sinsa (Line 3) / Hongik Univ. (AREX) |

What if a stop is closed or the weather is bad?
Swap the palace days or move a stop indoors rather than dropping a day. Seoul has several indoor options listed by Visit Seoul that fill the gap.
- Palace closed: If your day one falls on a Tuesday, visit Changdeokgung that day and move Gyeongbokgung to day two (and the reverse on a Monday).
- Rain: DDP and COEX are covered complexes, and Gwangjang Market's food alley is a good wet-weather meal stop.
- Shopping instead of Namsan: Visit Seoul: Myeongdong describes Seoul's shopping mecca, with street food and a strong reputation for Korean cosmetics; it is the beginner course's day-one stop.
- Tired legs: Drop Bukchon's hills and spend that time in Insa-dong, which is flatter.
FAQ
Is three days enough for Seoul?
Yes for the main highlights. Visit Seoul's own beginner course fits Myeongdong, the palaces, Insa-dong, Gwangjang Market, DDP, Namsan and Gangnam into three days, but you will have to pick and choose.
Which palace should I visit if I only have time for one?
Gyeongbokgung is the largest and most central, and entry is free if you wear a complete hanbok. Changdeokgung is the choice if you want the Secret Garden, which needs a guided tour.
What day of the week are the palaces closed?
Visit Seoul lists Gyeongbokgung as closed on Tuesdays and Changdeokgung as closed on Mondays. If a public holiday falls on the closing day, the closure moves, so check the official page.
Does the Banpo Rainbow Fountain run all year?
No. Visit Seoul lists it as operating from April to October, with 20-minute shows. In an October visit, confirm the last shows of the season on the official page.
Do I need a rental car in Seoul?
No. Every stop in this itinerary lists a subway station or an official transit link, and Seoul's subway and buses use one T-money card, so you can plan around stations.
